No way. There's no substitute for a good teacher. Or for a good substitute teacher. Virtual Nerd's mission is to help students learn. Our goal is to provide an additional educational resource for students. Our tutorials are meant to supplement, not replace, in-class instruction.
No. If you can find a good tutor, if you can afford private tutoring, and if you can fit it into your schedule, it can be an extremely powerful way to learn. In that case, Virtual Nerd can be an excellent supplement. On the other hand, if private tutoring is not an option for you, or if you want to explore other alternatives first, you've come to the right place.
No. We do not believe that providing answers to students' homework problems is an effective way to facilitate learning. Instead, our philosophy is to reinforce what students are taught in class, so they learn the concept, can apply what they have learned and can solve problems on their own. Our extensive library of tutorials is developed by Virtual Nerd and unique to Virtual Nerd. So, while our tutorials explain how to solve typical homework problems, they can't be used as a shortcut to the answer.
Virtual Nerd currently offers over 350 tutorials in Algebra 1. Click here for a listing of the topics we cover.
In the Fall, we will be launching a tremendously expanded library of tutorials adding coverage of Pre-Algebra and Algebra 2. Also for the Fall, we will be launching our first science subject: Physics.
You'll need to sign up for an account. We offer Basic (free) and Premium (paid) subscription plans. Our Premium Plan gives you unlimited access to our complete library of tutorials. Our Basic Plan includes, well, the basics. Click here for more information about our plans.
Are you an educator? Can you prove it? If so, you're entitled to receive Premium Plan access at absolutely no charge! Click here for more information specifically for educators.
If you have a computer and Internet connection that allow you to watch YouTube videos, there's a high probability you have what you need to take full advantage of all the features on our site. For more information, click here.
Well, that depends. If you're an educator, it's free. If not, the standard subscription rate for the Premium Plan is $49 per month. We also offer 3-month, 6-month and 12-month packages, which result in substantial savings. Also, check with your teacher and principal, because we may have given your school a discount code.
Not at this time, but soon. For the 2010-2011 school year, we will be launching an innovative tool to allow students to work on practice problems, take quizzes and get feedback. Two-way connections between our tutorials and our practice problems will allow students to progressively test, reinforce and troubleshoot their learning process in ways never before possible.
We work with a staff of experienced educators—teachers and tutors—to build original course content consistent with current textbooks. We complete an extensive review of the top textbooks and link our original content to textbook problems and concepts. We also ensure our content is aligned with standards defined by national math and science educators.
